Tesla: despite the slowdown, record sales

Despite the setbacks of Elon Musk in Twitter and the fact that Tesla lost two-thirds of its stock market value in 2022, the controversial electric vehicle manufacturer still broke sales records at the end of the year, in a context where the entire automotive industry is suffering a serious slowdown.

Tesla is known for its year-end sales blitzes. Moreover, just before the holidays, the manufacturer announced a $5,000 credit to all consumers who wanted to buy a Model 3 or a Model Y before the end of 2022. It even offered free charging to its charging network. Supercharger for the first 10,000 kilometres.

Alas, despite such incentives, Tesla failed to achieve the goals it set for itself in the 4e quarter, or to deliver more than 420,000 vehicles worldwide, which would have allowed it to benefit from the annual growth of 50% that it was aiming for.

Let’s put things in context

It’s important to note, however, that even though Tesla’s sales weren’t as strong as expected at the end of 2022, the automaker remains in excellent health. In reality, if the company did not achieve its objective, it is mainly because of the supply problems that the entire automotive industry is experiencing and which have delayed the delivery of certain models.

In other words, in addition to the 405,278 vehicles sold, more than 34,000 copies were still in transit at New Year’s. In reality, Tesla built 439,701 vehicles in 2022 and, in total, still sold 1.37 million. , which represents a 40% increase compared to 2021.

All of this is also happening in a context where the entire industry is experiencing a serious slowdown in sales caused, in part, by rising prices and interest rates. It should also be remembered that, at the end of 2022, more than 4.4 million new vehicles were missing on the planet due to ongoing parts supply problems.

We therefore deduce that none of this seems to have shaken Tesla’s sales too much, despite a recent increase in the price of its models. It is still the manufacturer that sells the largest number of electric vehicles globally.
