Test bench | Competition from the Hyundai Ioniq 6

The Ioniq 6 will turn heads. But the BMW i4 Gran Coupe, Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 have already started to attract buyers. The fight will not be easy.

BMW i4 Gran Coupe

Price: from $54,990

In the eyes of Hyundai executives, the BMW i4 is not among the targets of the Ioniq 6. Yet, in some respects, the German sedan compares favorably. At least, in its eDrive40 configuration ($64,644) whose alleged range is 484 km. The Ioniq 6 in an equivalent configuration (propulsion, a single engine) manages to cover a hundred kilometers more… The main attributes of the Bavarian lie in the functionality of its hatchback bodywork and its decidedly sportier road feel. . To obtain all-wheel drive, it is imperative to opt for the M50, but this one entails a more substantial expense (starting at $72,990).

Tesla Model 3

Beautifully designed, versatile and fun to drive, this sedan has risen – against all odds and regardless of the energy source that powers it – to the top of the best-selling sports sedans on the market. Compared to the Ioniq 6, the American offers a more diversified catalog, a fast and established charging infrastructure, proven general reliability and higher energy efficiency. It is also more functional and more spacious, including for luggage. On the other hand, it would benefit from raising its quality of construction to the level of that of the Ioniq 6.

Polestar 2

Price: from $53,950

Polestar 2

Unlike the Ioniq 6, this Sino-Swedish sedan is based on a modular architecture (code name CMA) able to move using thermal or electrical mechanics. That said, the entry-level (one engine and front-wheel-drive) model of the 2 is arguably Polestar’s most compelling offering against its South Korean rival. Its autonomy is lower, of course, but the 2, without being as temperamental as the BMW, is more agile than the Ioniq 6. More pleasant to drive too. On the other hand, the more compact dimensions of the Polestar make it a less welcoming sedan for its occupants.
