The Honda Civic loses its title of best-selling car
Decidedly, the year 2022 will have been filled with several twists and turns. Between supply difficulties, empty dealerships and the rise in interest rates at the end of the year, the automotive world has had its share of surprises. For example, the Honda Civic, which had been a top-selling car for over 24 years, was dethroned by its long-time competitor, the Toyota Corolla.
A hot fight
In January 2022, our colleague, William Clavey, pointed out that the Toyota Corolla had almost managed to take the title from the Honda Civic for sales in 2021, but the latter had managed to retain the lead in the rankings. However, according to figures released earlier this month by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc., the Corolla topped the sales charts with a lead of more than 3,000 units delivered in Canada.
On the side of the Quebec market, same story. According to the data currently available for the first 3 quarters of 2022, 10,038 Toyota Corollas were sold compared to 7,868 Honda Civics. The same goes for our neighbors to the south, the figures for 2022 show a 29% increase in sales for the Corolla and a decline of 28.62% for the Civic. Its figures show that despite the arrival of a new generation of the Honda Civic during the year 2021 as the 2022 model year, it will not have been enough to breathe new life into sales of the car. It must also be said that Toyota’s offer, with the Corolla which offers a hybrid engine, is an advantage over Honda, which has not offered it for several years.
2023, a year to watch
Despite the ever-present popularity for SUVs as well as the transition to electric vehicles, it will be interesting to follow the competition between the two cars during the year 2023. The availability as well as the interest rates offered at the buying and renting will certainly have an impact on sales figures. In addition, the addition of new hybrid versions offering all-wheel drive on the Corolla could allow it to gain ground. We must not forget either the addition of the performance version, the Corolla GR, which will surely not seek a large volume of copies delivered, but will compete directly with the Civic Type R, also available in limited quantities. .
