The Hyundai IONIQ 6 and the electrified Genesis GV70 are among the IIHS’s safest vehicles
L’Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) publishes the results of its crash tests every year. The most honorable mention is of course the TOP SAFETY PICK+, and it was recently explained that fewer vehicles had managed to obtain it over the last year.
The organization has just announced that, for the first time, three new electric vehicles have obtained the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award for the year 2023: these are the Genesis GV70 Electrified, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 and the Lexus RZ .
“It is exciting to see three new EVs from different brands achieve the highest level of safety,” said David Harkey, president of the IIHS. “Ensuring that safety continues to be a priority in alternatively powered vehicles is essential if we are to achieve the vision of zero road accidents. »
Safe for pedestrians
To be eligible for the prize TOP SAFETY PICK+ In 2023, a vehicle must earn good scores in driver-side and passenger-side frontal crash tests and side crash tests. Acceptable or good headlights must be offered as standard on all trims. A frontal collision prevention system must also be offered on the model, it must obtain the superior rating in the vehicle-pedestrian type evaluations in the tests carried out during the day and evening.
“To be environmentally friendly, our vehicles and cities must also be pedestrian-friendly,” Mr Harkey said. “All three vehicles are equipped with a frontal collision prevention system designed to protect pedestrians both during the day and at night, when most fatal accidents occur,” Harkey added.
The Hyundai Genesis GV70 Electrified is equipped with headlights rated “good” on all versions, while the Hyundai IONIQ 6 has headlights rated “acceptable” as standard.
In 2023, 28 more models received a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the IIHS.
