The next electric Volkswagen Golf will be built in Wolfsburg
At IAA Mobility Exhibition in Munich, in September 2023, Volkswagen had lifted the veil on the electric GTI concept. Called the ID.GTI, it reincarnated the model’s symbolic styling cues and projected it into the future, not to mention proportions that are consistent with the sport compact segment. In fact, it is rather a GTI version of the ID.2all concept which will likely replace the Polo subcompact in other markets.
An electric Golf GTI is nevertheless in the plans, like the rest of the Golf range. If we rely on what the manufacturer has just announced in a press release, it will be built at the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg.
True to the Golf
This announcement is in no way surprising, as the current Golf is already built at this iconic factory. Indeed, from model year 2026, the manufacturer will begin to build electric vehicles on its next modular architecture dedicated to electric, the SSP (for Scalable Systems Platform). This platform, an evolution of the MEB and which is already used for electric models, will have the particularity of being able to be separated by module in order to further reduce production costs. Volkswagen also plans to restructure its factories based on this platform. For example, a factory will only build one derivative of the platform and so on.
According to our sources, the first vehicle to emerge from this architecture in Wolfsburg will not be the next MK9, but rather a small electric subcompact SUV, about the size of a Taos. A second electric vehicle would also be in the plans, but nothing has yet been confirmed by the manufacturer in this regard. Only from model year 2028 will Volkswagen begin production and marketing of the Golf 9e generation, the MK9, which will completely abandon its thermal engines.
Golf GTI enthusiasts can therefore sleep in peace for a while longer, because it will not be tomorrow that the model will transform into a battery vehicle. Enjoy it while it still exists in its current form!
