The Rimac Nevera breaks the speed record for an electric car
Records are made to be broken, and the latest one to break is for the world’s fastest production electric car. The manufacturer’s first car, the Rimac Nevera set the bar at 412 kilometers per hour.
The team of Bugatti Rimac went to the track in Papenburg, Germany, to break a record, and she succeeded. Indeed, the Rimac Nevera reached an approved speed of 412 kilometers per hour. It was the Croatian pilot/stuntman/journalist Miro Zrncevic who found himself behind the wheel to achieve the feat.
The German Automotive Testing Papenburg track is ideal for this kind of exercise thanks to its 4 kilometer long straight line which allows the drivers to pick up maximum speed as soon as they come out of the curve. Rimac confirms that the exit from the curve was done at a speed of 250 kilometers per hour. The Nevera is technically limited to 352 kilometers per hour for production vehicles; removing the limit was a formality.
To ensure that the speed is recognized, the exercise was done in both directions, and the figure retained is the average of the two passages. It is also with the geolocation technology of the Racelogic V-Box that the speed was confirmed. To optimize the performance of the car, it was configured in “Top Speed” mode.
It was under the supervision of engineers from Rimac and Michelin that the record was approved. Michelin’s presence is necessary to ensure that the Cup 2R tires held up against centripetal forces. Rimac and Michelin already had a good idea of the capabilities of the Nevera since simulation tests had already been done with the C-Two, the prototype of the Nevera.
Miro Zrncevic did not hide his joy: “Driving at 412 kilometers per hour means traveling at a third of the speed of sound. I’ve driven the Nevera since its first laps, and to see it at this level of refinement is a very moving moment. The most important thing I discovered during the maximum speed tests was how composed and stable it is. This confirms that the aerodynamics and dynamics engineers have really done a good job. »
The Rimac Nevera is one of the most powerful cars in the world across all categories. Its 4 electric motors produce 1,887 horsepower (1,408 kilowatts) and 1,740 lb-ft of torque. In addition, despite this power, it offers an estimated range of 547 kilometers thanks to its 120 kilowatt-hour battery. Obviously, at 412 km/h, it is unlikely that the autonomy will remain the same! The Nevera also holds the record for the fastest quarter-mile in 8.582 seconds.
Conclusion
We are still far from the official record of the SCC Tuatara at 474.8 kilometers per hour and even further from the “unofficial” record of the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ at 490.48 kilometers per hour, but electric cars are progressing in speed more and more. We bet that this is the kind of record that Tesla is likely to be interested in when the Roadster eventually joins production.
