The stripping of the electric BMW i7 begins

We are only a few weeks away from the unveiling of the BMW i7, the world’s first large electric prestige sedan according to the manufacturer. Obviously, to make such a claim, one has to be a purist of body configurations. However, BMW is right in that the Lucid Air and the Mercedes-Benz EQS have a tailgate and not a closed trunk as will be the case for the i7.

Inspired by XM and S-Class Coupe

While we saw the first official images of the i7 in its camouflage a few weeks ago, BMW is now revealing details both outside and inside. Starting with the bodywork, the Bavarian manufacturer persists and signs with a gigantic grille that will even be illuminated. We notice a direct inspiration coming from the controversial BMW XM 2021 concept. The optical units will be split into two horizontal sections. Those in the upper section will be entitled to crystal encrustation for a luminosity that will certainly be spectacular. Here again, we can draw a parallel with the S-Class coupé which was available, as an option, with Swarovski crystals.

BMW takes this opportunity to announce the introduction of a new accessory for rear passengers, the BMW Theater screen. It is a 31-inch retractable screen mounted on the ceiling. We will also see a “Sky Lounge” panoramic roof with LED ambient lighting that can change color depending on the “My Mode” application, which is defined by the different driving programs. At the front, BMW offers a curved screen that serves as a support for the latest generation of the iDrive multimedia system.

The most powerful in history

Beyond the fact that it is a new generation of the 7 Series, the i7 will above all be the most powerful representative of the 7 Series in history. Everything remains to be confirmed at launch, but rumor has it that BMW would opt for a strategy similar to Tesla by using 3 electric motors. At the count, the power could reach some 740 horsepower. We are still a long way from the account of the Lucid Air which offers up to 1,111 horsepower. On the other hand, the i7 finds itself in the same waters as the AMG EQS which tops out at 751 horsepower in “Boost” mode.

Autonomy of 491 kilometers

As for power, just like the EQS, there is a 120 kilowatt-hour battery. BMW does not yet specify how many kilowatt hours will be usable. For comparison, the EQS frees up 107.8 kilowatt hours for the car’s range. BMW, however, reveals consumption forecasts of 19.7 to 18.9 kilowatt hours / 100 kilometers, which would allow an electric range of around 490 kilometers.

Unveiling in China

Now that China has become the world’s number one market for large, premium sedans and even electric cars, it’s no wonder the automaker chose the Shanghai Auto Show to unveil the i7. Not only will we see the electric version, but the new 7 Series range with, it seems, a new generation of engines, will also be presented there. This unveiling will take place on April 20.
