Toyota breaks the range record with the new Mirai

It was against the backdrop of Paris, France, that a team from Toyota France achieved the feat: traveling more than 1,000 kilometers on a single tank of hydrogen on board the new Toyota mirai.

On May 26, the iconic Eiffel Tower was illuminated for the very first time thanks to its new hydrogen energy supply. To highlight the event, Toyota Motor Europe and Toyota France decided that it was the perfect day to beat the world record for distance traveled on a single tank of hydrogen with a production vehicle. What could be better than the arrival of the new generation of the Toyota Mirai to do so!

The route was calculated: the start was at the HysetCo hydrogen station in Orly, in the suburbs of Paris. Once the tank cover was sealed, Victorien Erussard, the founder of Energy Observer, took the wheel to set off. Why did you choose this man? In fact, he is one of the gurus of hydrogen technologies, he is also the designer of the first ship equipped with a Toyota-designed hydrogen engine which also bears the name of Energy Observer. Working to expand the use of hydrogen, it is this company that is behind the new power source for the Eiffel Tower.

The route took the four different drivers south of Paris, then towards Loir-et-Cher and Intre-et-Loire. In order to be compliant, the feat was carried out under the constant observation of a bailiff. You can’t beat a record without strict surveillance, especially in France.

At the base, the Mirai reservoir was full. We are talking about 5.6 kilograms of hydrogen here. Extremely importantly, the manufacturer ensured that the fuel production was in line with its environmental ideals; there was therefore no pollution associated with the production of this hydrogen.

Toyota Mirai 2021

During those 1,003 kilometers, the Toyota Mirai maintained an average of 0.55 grams per kilometer, which is excellent for a product using this technology. As a result, Toyota breaks the record for distance traveled by a hydrogen-powered vehicle formerly owned by Hyundai with the Nexo. We were talking about 887.5 kilometers on a single tank with an average consumption of 0.706 grams / kilometer. Frustratingly for Hyundai, their record was set barely 10 days ago! Arrogant, but proud, Toyota even points out that there was a remaining autonomy displayed of 9 kilometers on the instrumentation.
