Volkswagen R will become an electric sub-brand by 2030
Announcements from manufacturers promising an electric future are multiplying. But the announcement that has just been made volkswagen about her performance division R risks spilling a lot of ink. Indeed, the German giant intends to transform this division into an electric sub-brand by 2030. It will rather be used to improve existing ID electric models.
As we explained in a column on the RPM+ show, the performance divisions will have a completely different role in an electric universe. While these divisions once designed engines, chassis, suspensions and even entire cars, they will become symbols of marketing rather than performance.
The details of this mysterious electric R sub-brand from Volkswagen are still nebulous, but what we understand from the manufacturer’s comments broadcast by the British media Autocar, the R sub-brand would rather make sure to improve models existing electrical IDs rather than developing their own models.
In other words, these models will offer even more power and torque than their regular versions, even more breathtaking acceleration and improved handling, without however replacing the powertrain. According to Reinhold Ivenz, head of Volkswagen’s R division, the electric R sub-brand will inherit the latest technologies implemented in the manufacturer’s racing cars and concepts, such as the ID R, in particular. Volkswagen, however, did not specify when it intends to begin this transformation.
