Volvo is the first European manufacturer to sign an agreement with Tesla

Almost every week, a manufacturer announces that it has signed an agreement with Tesla. Now it’s Volvo’s turn to follow suit. Indeed, in its ambition to become an exclusively electric brand by 2030, the manufacturer made this announcement this week. Volvo thus becomes, by the same token, the very first European manufacturer to sign an agreement with Tesla like Ford and GM, for example, have done recently.

Volvo’s turn

Under the agreement signed between Volvo Cars and Tesla, owners of the Swedish brand’s electric vehicles will have access to Tesla’s network of 12,000 superchargers across the United States, Canada and Mexico. This number will grow as Tesla’s network grows, not to mention the tens of thousands of public charging stations already available.

Volvo C40 Refill

To make Volvo vehicles compatible with Tesla’s network of superchargers, they will be equipped with the North American Charging Standard charging port (NACS) from 2025. As for current owners of Volvo XC40, C40 Recharge, EX30 and EX90, they too will be able to use the Californian manufacturer’s network thanks to an adapter, from 1er half of 2024. Once the transition from NACS chargers is integrated into Volvo vehicles, they will be able to continue to use the guns of Combined Charging Systems (CCS) using an adapter.

On the way to 2030

According to Volvo Cars, this agreement between the two manufacturers aims to allow the Swedish company to become an all-electric car manufacturer by 2030. Access to a network of more than 12,000 superchargers will facilitate and reassure the customer in the transition to electric vehicles.

Additionally, Volvo revealed in its statement that customers will be able to find charging replacements on their journey, including those from Tesla, through the Volvo Cars app. Following this news, Polestar has just confirmed that it will go in the same direction as Volvo, regarding the adoption of the NACS port.
