Volvo V90 Cross Country returns in 2022 with B6 engine

Volvo wagons have long been Volvo’s stronghold, before almost any luxury car maker took an interest in them. The descendant of the once popular Volvo XC70, the Volvo V90 Cross Country, however, was discontinued for 2020 as sales were confidential and a new model, the V60 Cross Country, hit the market. Here, however, the Volvo V90 Cross Country returns in 2022 after a two-year hiatus, with the addition of a new B6 mild hybrid powertrain.

What was our surprise to find that Volvo brought it back V90 Cross Country in 2022 when no one saw it coming. The manufacturer was not very talkative about this novelty, but we questioned him to find out what was going on.

According to information confirmed by Lucas Dias of Volvo Canada, the Volvo V90 Cross Country returns to the market for the year 2022 in a form roughly identical to that seen when the car was last distributed, in 2019. The formula therefore remains the same, except that this car arrives with a new mechanism called B6 and a new gear lever similar to that found in the brand’s Recharge plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Technical details

This new mechanism replaces the one called T6 within this model and brings with it a lot of technical improvements. The base remains the same, a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder placed transversely under the hood. The mechanical positive displacement compressor of the T6 engine is however replaced by an electric positive displacement compressor, which is powered by a 48 volt battery placed in the vehicle.

The machine is also equipped with a starter generator capable of giving an electric thrust of 13 horsepower and 29 lb-ft of torque and which makes it possible to recover energy normally lost in deceleration to fill the 48-volt battery. The total power is therefore 295 horsepower and the torque is 310 lb-ft.

Improved refinement

Although we haven’t had a chance to drive the car yet, the automaker says these improvements improve fuel economy and lower emissions. Also, the initial thrust and smoothness of the mechanics would be improved, particularly at low speed, increasing its overall refinement.

It now remains to be seen whether this mechanical change will revive consumer appeal to this car, which was abandoned for lack of popularity. The Volvo V90 Cross Country B6 2022 is currently available at Volvo dealerships and its base price is $ 68,265, including freight and preparation.
