In the eyes of many purists, the end of production of the Dodge Charger and Challenger in 2024 comes as a great disappointment. For them, the fact that the manufacturer is transferring these iconic models to electrification remains a difficult pill to swallow and Dodge has been quite adamant about the future of its sports cars. They will be electric.
However, a rumor is circulating online to the effect that a version of the next Dodge Charger could run on gasoline. It would be, according to rumour, the twin-turbo inline six-cylinder named Hurricane at Stellantis.
Only Daytonas would be electric?
This information was first published by the media Mopar Insiders, which specializes in coverage of Dodge, Chrysler, Ram and Jeep products. The news was later reported by Motor1. Dodge, however, remains silent on the possibility of preserving the internal combustion engine in the Charger.
Rumor has it that only the Daytona version, which will be offered in different versions, is electric. An entirely separate version of the range would instead feature the Hurricane engine. Thanks to its two turbochargers and its 3.0-liter displacement — similar to what BMW uses for its M2, M3 and M4 sports cars — this gas-powered Charger could develop a power of up to more than 500 horsepower.
Knowing that Dodge currently offers different power levels for its Chargers and Challengers, it would therefore be quite reasonable to assume that the Hurricane engine remains relevant for a model historically known for performance.
Of course, everything is still in the speculation stage. One thing is certain, it is that Stellantis intends to be present at the Detroit Motor Show 2023 (North American International Auto Show) on September 16. According to reliable sources, the automaker will make big unveilings on the floor of the Huntington Palace. We will therefore come back to you with all the details as soon as they are available.
